Only Hood
Every hiker knows how useful a hood can be to protect from cold wind. We thought we would make just a hood you can pull out and put on whenever you feel chilly, regardless of whether your base layer or jacket comes with its own hood.
The new Shadow Rip fabric* is breathable yet windproof, allowing the heat to escape while on the move. What’s more, the “Only Hood” design is so comfortable that you almost forget you’re wearing it, and it also has a UV protection of UPF 30 or higher.
Use it as a windproof head covering when you are feeling chilly, a neck warmer, or even as a sun hat.

If only I had a hood
I was walking along the ridge of Japan’s Northern Alps when a wonderful idea came to me.
In the Northern Alps, the temperature is quite unstable; it can get very hot or very cold, and every time I took my shirt off or put it on, I had to stop and unshoulder my backpack.

When I was walking the trail with a pair of shorts and a merino T-shirt, I was a bit chilly. I didn’t think I really needed a windbreaker or additional layer but thought if I maybe had a hood I would be fine.
I thought about making a T-shirt with a hood but decided against this as the hood would just be in the way when not in use. But then this day, as I was walking along the Northern Alps I thought; “What if I had Only a hood?”
If I had a separate hood, then
- When it gets chilly, I don’t have to unshoulder my backpack to put on an additional layer.
- I don’t have to make a choice between hooded or hoodless clothes.
- Any clothes can be hooded with the Only Hood.
As a hood enthusiast myself, I have always talked about the effectiveness of hoods for hiking wear. So for me, making clothes without hoods sometimes took a lot of persuasions. I was certain that with the Only Hood everything would work out.
Form and function
Shadow Rip: lightweight, strong, durable
The mountain environment can be harsh; the weather is often unstable, temperature changes drastically, the wind is strong and the sunlight is intense. In these situations, it is necessary for the outdoor shirt to achieve both a high level of breathability and windproof performance at the same time. Our newly-adopted Teijin’s Shadow Rip fabric is breathable yet windproof while being light and strong.
Usually, thin and light fabrics have a ripstop structure, in which thick yarns are interwoven in a grid pattern in order to enhance tear resistance. This structure, however, often creates an unsmooth surface, causing the pilling due to weak wear resistance.
Shadow Rip is woven with fine, highly strong yarn to achieve a smooth appearance, and offers excellent resistance to snagging and abrasion while being light and strong. It is also wrinkle-proof and pilling-proof, featuring a soft texture.

When folded, the Only Hood is super compact and can be tucked away in a pocket or your backpack.
Works with any layer
No need to be torn between hoodless or hooded clothes. With the Only Hood, any of your base layers, shirts, pullovers, or T-shirts will instantly be hooded.

Details
Use the stretch cord at the chin to get a snug fit.
If you tighten the stretch cord, the Only Hood can also be used as a simple neck warmer.
The hem is wide for easy wearing and the bottom edge is colored so you won’t accidentally put it on the wrong way.
Effectiveness of a hood
Our experience told us that hoods were effective in maintaining body temperature in cold weather, and this is confirmed by various studies.
In two experiments, the neck, waist, abdomen, upper arms, fingers, calves, and toes were separately warmed to see the warming effect of a certain part of a body. The result showed that the warming effect was the most obvious when the neck was insulated and that keeping the neck warm had a great effect on warming the whole body.

Preventing color transfer
Before your first use, we recommend giving this item a wash to help rinse out any extra dye from production.
If left unwashed and wet, it may cause color transfer when in contact with white or light-colored clothing for long periods—especially out on the trail or after heavy activity.
*Wash it solo or with similar colors to be safe.

- Use a neutral detergent and wash at 40°C or lower.
- Wash separately or use a laundry net bag.
- Line dry in the shade.
- Tumble dry below 60°C.
- Do not bleach and do not use fabric softener.
- Iron on low. Do not steam.
- Do not dry-clean.
